Tobias is a fox-shifter, stolen in childhood from his home-world. Now he works as an agent for the secretive and powerful sentinels, trying to bring an end to the interworld slave trade.

Etty is a street-smart spitfire from the wrong side of the tracks. She harbors untrained magical abilities and a deep longing for a better life. Can she channel these into working as Tobias’ assistant?

Will they survive a life-changing mission where love and danger are only a heartbeat away, and the fate of rift worlds hangs in the balance?

Author Bio: Since her childhood, growing up in New Zealand, Diana has been an avid storyteller. For years she enjoyed teaching art and special education, while continuing to write as a hobby.

Bronze Fox Excerpt

She hurried to the front door, hoping the cabbie hadn’t given up waiting. To her surprise it was Mr. Shelton himself, standing on the steps, hat in hand. He was more handsome than she remembered, wearing a dark gray suit that fit his tall form perfectly. A moss green cravat at his throat and a star flower on his lapel completed the look.

In the glow of early evening, his eyes were warm topaz, his brown hair threaded with copper. The lines of his face were lean and sharp, making her think again of a fox. It didn’t hurt that he was grinning wide enough to show teeth.

“I wasn’t expecting you, Mr. Shelton. I thought we were meeting at the restaurant.” She used her best ‘proper’ accent, trying to cover the excitement bubbling up inside.

“Hopefully you’re not put off by my enthusiasm.” He offered his arm. “I read your note as a positive sign, and I couldn’t wait to hear your answer. Impatience is one of my many vices.”

She took that in, as they walked together down the steps to the street. Apparently, he was still interested in hiring her for the position. She’d been half afraid that pity motivated his offer, and he might have come to regret it.

Feeling as if she was play acting, Etty allowed him to open the door and hand her up into the cab. Normally she would have hopped in by herself, but this was not a familiar situation. Mr. Shelton sat down opposite her, their knees almost touching. He tapped his walking stick on the cab ceiling, and they rolled into motion.

“You’re quiet tonight,” he observed. “I don’t recall you being particularly demure.”

She laughed, in spite of her nerves. “You said a mouthful there. I’m about as demure as a raccoon.”

“An apt comparison. Raccoons are tough and audacious…survivors, much like yourself.”

“You sure know how to flatter a girl.”

“Ah, but you’re not just some ‘girl’. If you were, I wouldn’t want you for my assistant. Which brings us to the question at hand. What have you decided?”

Now that it came to telling him, her mouth dried up. Her whole life hung in the balance. Everything was about to change, in what way she couldn’t be sure. It was exhilarating and frightening at the same time.

“I believe I’d like to try the job, Mr. Shelton.” There, she’d said it.

“Excellent!” His delight seemed genuine. “But, if you don’t stop calling me Mr. Shelton, I shall be offended. I want you for a friend, not a polite acquaintance.”

“Sorry about that. It just feels strange. I don’t usually call toffs…excuse me…gentlemen by their first names.”

“Well, get used to it. From now on, I’m Tobias. Mr. Shelton is history.”

“All right, Tobias.” His name rolled pleasantly off her tongue. Perhaps calling him that wouldn’t feel so odd after all.

Life is all about new beginings. Sometimes you have to take big chances to reap big rewards. But the best laid plans don't often factor in the kind of chemistry that takes your breath away.

She can't bring herself to start a new chapter. A chance discovery leads her to a risky decision with serious consequences. But the way Kara sees it, life is all about listening to yourself when your heart has something to say.

To help combat the depressed feelings Jess has turned to partying and drinking with her friend Nance. After a party one night Nance leaves Jess to walk home alone drunk, Jess doesn't mind though until a car pulls up beside her offering her a ride home. Inside the car are two boys named Braxton and Flynn. She was lucky that night that two nonkillers picked her up when things could have gone much worse. Jess allows them to take her home and during the ride she gets to know the two boys, Braxton is very talkative while the sarcastic Flynn throws in snarky comments here and there. Though the ride was short, the day after Jess can't get Flynn out of her mind.

Soon after Jess is invited to go to Nances house while her mother isn't home to drink and have fun. Jess takes Nance up on her offer and goes over for drinks and fun. A few drinks later after Nance decides to cam with guy topless, Jess is pressured to lose her top as well which she does but only under the condition that no one but Nance sees her. In the heat of the moment while drunk Jess decides to browse Ebay for a dress and finds and  $10,000 dress that she buys without even thinking clearly about how crazy a move like that was. Nance's mom returns home early to find the girls dancing topless in her backyard and drunk. She calls Jess's father to come get her and tells him that they were drinking and dancing topless which besides the purchase of the dress which was made on a credit card gets Jess into even more trouble than she already was in. As punishment for throwing away money on stupid things and bad behavior Jess's dad forces her to hand over her cell phone for the summer and to get a summer job volunteering at a local shelter serving meals to the less fortunate.

Scared of the what ifs Jess begins to work at the shelter, she quickly makes friends with one of the staff members named Wilf who owns the greenhouse at the shelter. Jess has always loved flowers so she asks if she can help out with the greenhouse which Wilf takes her up on. The first time Jess walks into the greenhouse she sees something that has been on her mind since that fateful night....Flynn working on a broken shelf in the greenhouse. Through out the summer the two become closer and closer much to the dismay of the staff and both of their families who think that because Flynn is a shelter "guest" who with his little brother frequently eat at the shelter due to money problems at home shouldn't be with a rich girl who lives in a big house and has whatever she wants. But those things don't matter two Jess and Flynn but they must fight for their forbidden love while all the cards are against them. Fight for true love and you will be rewarded greatly!

Thoughts: I enjoyed this book even though I had some problems with it, one problem that really annoyed the crap out of me was the fact that most of the adults in the book were so immature almost to the point of being worse than the teenagers. That was a huge problem for me and had me wanting the throw the book across the room because of how stupid the adults were acting. There were also some typos in the book but those were easily ignored. The love story was very cute and enjoyable and even if certain things annoyed me I still couldn't put the book down. So my recommendation goes out that if you want a summer fling CHOOSE THIS BOOK! Damn this woman can write! :)

Author Q & A

Q: How did you come up with the plot of An Ordinary Magic?

A I can't put a finger on any one, specific inspiration for the plot of "An Ordinary Magic." The book took shape over 20 years ago while I was an undergraduate studying creative writing at the University of California, Irvine. At the time, I needed to develop a senior thesis for my enrollment in the Campuswide Honors Program and knew that it was going to be a novel of some kind. But it was a novel that needed to be grounded in scholarly research (that was the requirement). I had always been interested in Voodoo and polytheistic religions so I settled on a novel set in a fictional Caribbean town and based it on a Voodoo-like culture. The plot, which is really secondary to the characters in a work of literary fiction like "An Ordinary Magic," was heavily influenced by my own relationship with my biological father and step-father. The specific details, well, they are just the product of a very active imagination.

Q: What are your favorite writing conditions?

AI don't really have favorite writing conditions. I don't need silence. I don't need solitude. I can pretty much write anywhere.

Q: Who is your favorite writer and why?

A: My favorite writer is probably Cormac McCarthy (with a close second of Toni Morrison). Not only are his stories moving, his characters believable, his settings perfect, but his mastery of language adds a dimension to his writing that most writers never grasp. His work is as much art as it is storytelling.

Q: What was the hardest part about writing An Ordinary Magic?

A: The hardest part about writing "An Ordinary Magic" was ensuring that the characters were believable. Writing a compelling plot is easy. Getting all the facts straight can be handled by a good outline. But making sure characters are believable requires really thinking through what they are doing, why they are doing it, how they are doing it, and what that means to everything else happening in the book. In a quality piece of literary fiction, everything is interconnected both causally and thematically. That's hard to do.

Q: What is your favorite book / series and why?

A: A little guilty pleasure here. My favorite book series, hands down, is the Sword of Shannara series by Terry Brooks. I am absolutely amazed every time I re-read these stories how intricate and detailed the fantasy world is that Brooks has created. Although his characters can be a little shallow at time, the stories are tantalizingly drawn and the plots are well through-through making for an immersive reading experience.

Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson BOOK REVIEW!

                                                          Amazon ** Barnes&Noble

Title: Steelheart

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Published: Delacorte Press

Most don't remember a time before calamity struck, leaving the world riddled with superhuman like people with abilities much like a superhero would have...but these people or Epics are they are called are no heros. Most people with Epic abilities are mean ruthless people who care nothing about the people that step in their way to world domination. The world today is a broken place where areas are labeled by the epic that rules the are instead of the actual name of the state or country.

David grew up around the Epics but they were never really a threat until one day when he was little and his father took him to a bank. David's father however wasn't the only person with the bank in mind that day, it was also on the mind of an Epic who was bent on destruction. In the process of destroying the bank the little Epic drew the attention of a much more powerful Epic named Steelheart who had started to claim this Chicago area as his own. Steelheart decided to make an appearance at the bank to take out the smaller Epic who was crouching in on his territory. David's father thought Steelheart was there to save them so tried to help when the smaller Epic tries to attack Steelheart from behind. A shot was fired from the gun held by Davids father, the bullet hits it's target killing the smaller Epic but it also cut a man that was supposed to be unharmable....Steelheart.

Angered by the wound to his cheek Steelheart kills everyone in the bank including Davids father before using his powers to turn the whole bank into steel. David just barely escaped death that day but he left with something that most have never seen. He saw Steelheart bleed....

Years later and a grown up David is hell bent on the death of the man who killed his father. How do you kill someone that is indestructible? He would also have to get by all of Steelhearts Epic minions since he is the new ruler of Newcago (Chicago) which has since been turned to complete steel and has had the sun taken away from it. Getting to someone so powerful would call for some help and David can think of no other rebels than the Reckoners a group that have quite a few Epic deaths under their belt, but getting into a highly secretive rebel group is harder than you think so David hopes that his knowledge about Steelheart will get him in. With the help of the Reckoners there is hope that Chicago will be the way it was before the big change. It will take a lot of deaths but David has something that most do not....the knowledge that Steelheart can be harmed.

Thoughts: I thought at times that this book dragged a bit and was a bit to slow, but the action quickly made up for the slow parts. I will continue on with the series because the whole anitsuperhero thing just catches my attention.
